CranioSacral Therapy

One popular alternative therapy for children with autism is Craniosacral therapy. Frequently prescribed by Dr. Mehl-Madrona, Cranio-sacral therapy is a gentle hands-on approach which helps improve central nervous system function and dissolve the effects of stress. It also helps boost the immune system and can be used for a number of infantile disorders in addition to autism.

CranioSacral Therapy began at the beginning of the 20th century with the work of Dr. William Sutherland, an osteopathic physican, who developed a treatment method known as Cranial Osteopathy. In 1970, another osteopathic doctor, John E. Upledger observed a rhythmic movement in the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord while assisting with surgery. Dr. Upledger's curiosity about this pulse, led him to Dr. Sutherlandēs treatment methods and to develop CranioSacral therapy.

CranioSacral Therapy involves using gentle touch to help balance the cerebrospinal fluid and the membranes and tissues surrounding the spine and brain. A treatment takes about an hour and involves placing the hands on the neck, feet, jaws, and sacrum.

Parents who have had their children treated with CranioSacral Therapy often report that the child is more relaxed, able to make better eye contact and is more verbal.
