Hollow-Turned Lidded Jar
Spalted Maple with Eucalyptus Burl

This is another one of those gems that was pulled from my pile of sawdust and raw material. Generating a vessel from this multi-branched spalted maple log presented a great challenge to creating the finished product.

For this lidded jar, I inserted a piece of Eucalyptus Burl at the top and as a cap. This involved a very labor-intensive task of matching and setting all the pieces so that a smooth and continuous transition was resolved. The inserted Eucalyptus piece adds a bit of reddish color complementing the pale natural colors of the vessel. This was the first piece that I created with a lid, replicating a Chinese laborer's hat. This vessel now sits in the home of a client that is deeply involved in the martial arts and has employed the Asian motif as a part of his home decoration.
