Spalted Maple Natural Edge Bowl

To create the natural curvature appearance I started with a Spalted Maple log that was roughly 12 inches in diameter and worked from the outside of the tree inward towards the center of the tree. The curved rim is not carved or sanded it is the natural outside edge of the log giving it, in this case, the undulated pleasing shape.

Spalted material is a joy to work with, it is like that famous Box of Chocolate "You don't know what you're going to get". This recycled raw material was retrieved from a potential firewood pile in the Bellevue area of Pittsburgh with the help from a dear old friend, thanks Leon.
