Full Week Workshop: "Allopathic Medicine Meets Indigenous Healer: Activating the Inner Healer with Traditional Native American and Asian Therapies" (with Pamela Miles)

Omega Institute for Holistic Studies

Pura Vida Yoga & Retreat Center: Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

Contact: Omega Institute @ 1-800-944-1001 or by Email

In this workshop, you learn how to create an enduring partnership with your "inner healer." Using a combination of Native American and Asian practices, including movement, vibrational healing, guided imagery, sacred art, journal writing, meditation, ritual, and ceremony, you experience the spiritual connectedness known to shamans and mystics. This weeklong immersion in healing will be meaningful for those who desire profound self-discovery and is appropriate for anyone whose suffering is interfering with his or her quality of life, even those facing serious illness.

Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona and Pamela Miles bring years of experience to this workshop. Mehl-Madrona is currently the clinical program director at the renowned Center for Health and Healing of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. He is the author of Coyote Medicine, a book about integrating traditional Native American healing with conventional medicine. Mehl-Madrona comes from Cherokee and Lakota ancestry, and has been integrating indigenous healing into his practice of medicine and psychiatry since 1973. In 1999, he published a paper in Alternative Therapies showing that 107 people who had participated in his weeklong healing intensives were significantly healthier five years later than a matched group who had used conventional medicine alone. [See Traditional Native American Indian Medicine: Treatment of Chronic Illness]

Pamela Miles is a holistic practitioner, educator, and writer with 30 years' experience in yoga, meditation, astrology, and traditional healing arts, including 15 years practicing and teaching Reiki. She has created programs in several New York City hospitals where people with cancer or HIV learn Reiki self-treatment.

Three-Day Workshop: "Introduction to the Ancestors", with Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona and Barbara Biziou

Westford, Vermont

6979 E. Broadway, Suite 125

Contact: Barbara Biziou @ 212-741-3358 or by Email or through her Website

In this three day workshop, we will explore the role of our ancestors in our modern life. Going beyond the obvious roles that the ancestors have played in contributing DNA to our genetic code and building the world in which we live, we wonder if the ancestors still exist to enlighten and support us. If so, where are they and how can we communicate with them?

On another note, we also carry the unresolved life patterns of our ancestors. These can be source of discomfort in our lives. We re-enact these patterns unless we consciously address them and heal them.

Most indigenous cultures honored the ancestors. In Asia, families build ancestral shrines. Native Americans and Africans made place at the table for departed ancestors. Mediums purport to communicate with our recently departed ancestors. Channels communicate with the great and the dead. Television shows like John Edward's Crossing Over are immensely popular.

In this workshop, we suggest that the spirits of the ancestors are real and that we can learn to communicate with them, to receive their guidance, and to use their presence for healing. We need their wisdom to guide us just as every ancient culture did. Without them, we lose our perspective on the ages and fall into ecological and personal disaster.

First Weekend of a Four-Weekend Training Program: "Native American Medicine and Healing; Enriching Your Life & Practice With Indigenous Wisdom"

Spirit in Action Center

Tucson, Arizona

6979 E. Broadway, Suite 125

Contact: Davena @ 520-751-7502 or by Email

In this 4 weekend series, we will discover how the insights and wisdom of Native American healing and culture can enrich our personal and professional lives. In the first weekend (open to anyone), we will study the medicine wheel and its spiral philosophy of growth and development. We will learn daily practices and rituals, including those to welcome the dawn, greet twilight, encompass daily prayers, and offer protection and gratitude.

We will learn about North American use of imagery and visualization, translated literally as, "putting them to sleep so that they dream like they're asleep, but they're really awake". We will learn how to clear energy from ourselves, our sacred objects, and our dwelling places. We will review the concept and practice of purification, medicine bags, vision quests, and sweat lodge ceremonies.

In subsequent weekends we will explore plant spirit medicine, nutrition and herbs, large group ceremony and ritual, Native body work, energy medicine, and Native-style mindbody healing, to develop a more complete awareness of these traditions.

In this final session we will immerse ourselves in the rich techniques of healing stories and guided visualizations many Native American cultures refined into masterful therapeutic modalities. We will learn how to develop rituals to use with our clients as well as for our own healing and protection, and we will close our time together with ceremonies that include the Lakota pipe ceremony and "spirit expulsion" ceremonies.

Note: The first weekend - November 1st & 2nd, 2002 - is open to all. This final weekend is limited to participants enrolled in the full training.

Conference: "Autism One Conference"

Loyola University

Chicago, Illinois

Day & Time TBA:

Lecture: "Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Autism"

  • Dr. Mehl-Madrona will review complementary and alternative therapies for autism, discussing the areas supported strongly by research and venturing to those areas that are anecdotal or theoretically supported, but not yet studied. He will review the evidence for nutritional therapies (especially the gluten-casein free diet), vitamin therapies (especially fatty acids, B-complex, magnesium, vitamin A, trace minerals, etc.), sulfation and or chelation (DMSA, SAMe, NAC, other chelators), neurofeedback, craniosacral therapy, family therapy, spiritual healing including Native American and chi healing, homeopathy, naturalistic behavior therapy, and more.

  • A systems approach to autism will be examined, in which multiple causal agents evoke common pathways and treatments need not necessarily relate to original causes. We will review insights from chaos theory which show that small informational changes may produce more dramatic changes in outcome than large interventions devoid of information. Dr. Mehl-Madrona will conclude with general recommendations for how a parent should logically proceed to attempt and to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative therapies.

For a additional information, please contact Edmund Arranga by Phone @ 714-680-0792 or by Email. For registration, please email Registration@AutismOne.org.

Detailed information on the Conference's presentations on Biomedical Treatments, Behavior / Communication / Education Therapies, Complementary / Alternative Treatments and Government / Legal / Personal Issues is also available on the website: Autism One Conference.
