Please help this healing fire to burn brighter by bringing a piece of kindling to this site! Here is how you may do this! |
This page not only lists all the federally recognized tribes of Native Americans, but also has links from those tribes for their official websites, stories and legends, books, photographs and artwork. This is a work very much in progress and will take a long while to complete [unless you all help with this resource]. Right now I have links to over 150 website locations from about 26 different tribes on this page. I will try to add comprehensive links to an additional one or two tribes each month (moon).

These tribes are listed alphabetically by their "Federally" recognized name. For instance: the "Maidu" Indians are not listed under the letter "M", but are listed under the letter "B", in the Quick Index above, for "Berry Creek Rancheria of Maidu Indians of California". Another example is that there are many bands of Sioux Indians - such as the Cheyenne River Sioux, the Oglala Sioux, etc.
If you do not know the Federal name of a tribe, we strongly suggest you use your browser's "Find" feature and type in the name of the tribe (such as "Sioux") that you are interested in. In Netscape and Internet Explorer, this feature can be found under the "Edit" menu, and is called "Find on Page" or "Find", or Control + F. To find additional listings, use Control + G, or "Find Again".
We hope this tip helps you in your journey, and we apologize for the Federal Government's making it so difficult - as they have done so in so many other ways for the Native Americans - ever since they invaded this once great Nation and usurped its sacred lands.
If you know of websites sponsored by any of the tribes below, please send them to me and I will add it to this resource, or if you are a member of one of these tribes and wish to write something about your people's unique vision or story of healing, I will attempt to publish it here as well. Also, if you notice any corrections or additions that need to be made to the list below, please suggest these to the webmaster of this site. Thank-you, and many blessings.

Do you notice how scattered and separated many of these tribes have become under our supposedly "United States" federal government and the Bureau of "Indian" Affairs (BIA)? It was not always so. Today too, our souls and spirits have become disjointed and separate as well - causing much unneeded suffering. The healing ways of all of the world's indigenous cultures are in dire peril, but need not be lost, and the time is perhaps now coming to illuminate and share the culture and ways of the Native American Peoples with those outside your tribe - those, including wasichu who wish to follow the great red road in a sacred way as best they can - who wish to be gathered in.
There are relatively few websites about the Arapahoe. This site is about many Native American Nations in this area, so I am putting it here, because I feel it is very important. I quote from this site: "Many American Indians and conservationists share a philosophy that respects the Earth and recognizes people's responsibility to be stewards of the land. Conservation organizations and tribes are often concerned about the same natural resource management issues. Some examples of these overlapping concerns are reducing pollution from gold mining near the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana, reintroducing gray wolves in central Idaho, and dealing with the impact of rapid development in the northern Rockies. These shared concerns demonstrate that American Indians and conservation organizations could benefit from working together to achieve mutual goals of protecting the environment.Despite some cases of successful collaboration between tribes and conservation groups, however, the potential for joint efforts is not being reached. The two communities have not worked together as often as might be expected and, at times, have even been at odds with one another."
Arapaho (also spelled Arapahoe or Arrapahoe) is an Algonquian language spoken by 1000 people in Wyoming. Gros Ventre is considered an Arapaho dialect by most linguists - though the two tribes maintain distinct identities, the languages are primarily mutually comprehensible. Most Arapaho and Gros Ventre speakers are elderly, but the Arapaho tribe is working to revitalize the language by teaching it to younger Arapahos. This site aslo has good links to other information on the Arapahoes.
This web-page from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) gives some good background information. Am excerpt: "The Northern Arapaho migrated west out of Minnesota onto the Great Plains in 1600, at about the same time that the Eastern Shoshone migrated east out of the Nevada-Utah area. In 1863, the first Fort Bridger treaty set boundaries encompassing an area of over 44 million acres for what was then called the Shoshone Reservation. The second Treaty of Fort Bridger, in 1868, scaled this land down to less than 2.8 million acres."
An excerpt: "The Arapahos probably moved onto the western plains from the woodlands area near the Great Lakes, for they exhibit many traditions similar to Algonquian-speaking groups of that region. When they made the move is unknown. During the eighteenth century there were several divisions of Arapahos, which ranged from the Saskatchewan River south into Colorado and perhaps Oklahoma, west to the foothills of the Rockies, and east into western South Dakota and Kansas. The northernmost division, the Gros Ventres, settled in Montana."
This report summarizes the documentation for the Northern and Southern Arapaho human remains housed at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Institution. Following discussions between representatives of the Northern Arapaho, the Southern Arapaho, and the NMNH Repatriation Office, the Southern Arapaho requested the return of the individuals found to be Southern Arapaho. A group of seven Southern Arapaho remains were repatriated to a delegation which came to the NMNH in June 1994. These included two individuals killed at the Sand Creek Massacre, four individuals from Oklahoma, and one individual from Kansas.
A transcript of stories told by Dr. Pius Moss, an Elder of the Arapaho Tribe on the Wind River Reservation. There are three parts: "The origins of the Earth and the Arapaho Nation", "The Buffalo and Nomadic Life" and "The Arapaho and the Wind River Reservation".

Gary and Cathy Keene, owners of Ancient Ways, take great pride in ensuring the quality of the work they carry. They do this by working closely with the artists. The bags, cases, beadwork and drums for sale at Ancient Ways haven't been made anonymously at some factory. They are made by the Keene's neighbors and relatives. They come ladened with stories, traditions and care that make them each unique. The Eastern Shoshone and the Northern Arapahoe are particularly well known for their beadwork and many of the artists whose work is on display at Ancient Ways were taught how to bead at a young age. The patterns they create - multicolored tipis, stylized mountains, beaded feather patterns, even buffalo trails - are patterns that have their roots in ancient traditions.
This book by Margaret Coel recounts the life of the Arapaho chief, diplomat, and linguist, describes the experiences of his tribe during the nineteenth century, and clears up misconceptions about the Sand Creek massacre. Please also see this page for many other books by Margaret Coel about the Arapaho Indians.
Sherman Sage (ca. 1844‚1943) was an unforgettable Arapaho man who witnessed profound change in his community and was one of the last to see the Plains black with buffalo. As a young warrior, Sage defended his band many times, raided enemy camps, saw the first houses go up in Denver, was present at Fort Laramie for the signing of the 1868 treaty, and witnessed Crazy Horse's surrender. Later, he visited the Ghost Dance prophet Wovoka and became a link in the spread of the Ghost Dance religion to other Plains Indian tribes. Anthropologist Jeffrey D. Anderson gathered information about Sage's long life from archives, interviews, recollections, and published sources and has here woven it into a compelling biography.
In 1963, a group of distinguished Cherokees founded the Cherokee National Historical Society, a private non-profit corporation designed to preserve the history and culture of the Cherokee people - past, present, and future.

The Cheyenne and Arapaho of Oklahoma unite two of the most famous tribes in the American west. Both nations are actually the southern branches of their respective tribes. The northern Arapaho are found on the Wind River Reservation of Wyoming. The southern band moved to the Indian Territory as a result of the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867 which was signed by Chief Little Raven as leader of the Southern Arapaho. The Southern Cheyenne, now officially just the Cheyenne, are survivors of one of the most disgraceful acts that occurred during the Indian Wars of the Plains - the Sand Creek Massacre.

The carefully crafted prose of Mari Sandoz brings the rhythms and images of the Cheyenne language and Cheyenne storytelling to a non-Indian audience. To read it is to absorb the rhythms and images, to feel an illusion of becoming more Indian as chapter follows chapter, to understand with an Indian mind the genocidal subjugation and impoverishment of a tribe that hoped for peace.
A look at the Southern Cheynenne as they live today chronicles their history and discusses their tribal structure and leadership, their traditions, their language, their encounter with prejudice, and more.
A study of contemporary Southern Cheyenne women's music, including an overview of Cheyenne culture and history as well as analyses of 32 songs and their variants . A sampling of closely related Arapaho Indian songs is an appendix.
Paper reissue of the 1976 edition with a new preface.
The most accurate account that I've read of the events leading up to the Sand Creek Massacre and the years that followed. Beautifully written and researched, this book will take you there, to Sand Creek on that fateful and sad November morning so many years ago. This book was written with sensitivity and respect for all those touched by this unfortunate event in history.
In the aftermath of Little Big Horn, many Northern Cheyenne Indians were removed from Montana to Oklahoma, far from their ancestral territory. Beset by illness, famine, poverty, and corruption on the part of the government officials who oversaw their reservation, a band of 300 Cheyenne under Chief Dull Knife fled the reservation in 1878 and journeyed more than a thousand miles across the high plains to return to Montana; the federal government declared them to be renegades and sent thousands of soldiers to return them. In 1995 Boye, a professor of English at Lydon State College in Vermont, joined three of Dull Knifes descendants in a journey retracing the Cheyennes difficult road home.

This list is a published list of federally acknowledged tribes in the contiguous 48 states and in Alaska. The list is updated from the last such list published in February 16, 1995 (60 FR 9250), to include tribes acknowledged through the Federal acknowledgment process. The listed entities are acknowledged to have "the immunities and privileges available to other federally acknowledged Indian tribes by virtue of their government-to-government relationship with the United States as well as the responsibilities, powers, limitations and obligations of such tribes." 25 CFR 83.2 (1996 ed.). We have, however, continued the practice of listing the Alaska Native entities separately solely for the purpose of facilitating identification of them and reference to them given the large number of complex Native names.
